Such a useful post! I’ve now got a pair of Dr Denim wide jeans in dark indigo (so hard to get good dark denim) and they were on ASOS in the sale - winner!

Thank you, Esther. I basically only buy things you recommend. You’re providing an essential service and I’m v grateful.

An update! I’ve been totally influenced and my Anthropologie trousers have arrived and I am so fucking furious because they are PERFECT so now I need to get another pair in black. I’ve the proportions of ET (I blame that analogy on Claudia Winkleman but she’s right) and trousers are impossible. But these are exactly what I’m looking for, once they’ve been shortened.

Now let’s see what the shirt looks like once it arrives.

I owe you commission!

Recently added a knitted vest over a shirt or long sleeve top.

Helps keep me warm and has attracted a lot of compliments.

Got them in grey (cheap from Primark), Navy from M&S, lovely dark teal green from Seasalt (in the sale). Has updated what I already have and are functional too.

I would love it esther if you could do a post about kitchens. I feel its VERY spike. I'm about to design entire new ktichen (i'm building a house, its not fun and kevin MC hasn't visited it yet, nor will he in his puffy coat) but i have free reign to design whole kitchen in living /kitchen room. I have an island and want ALL the advice from anyone who has done it. i've never chosen my own stuff and feel Spikers would be great help. thank you!x

With respect to underwear, my underwear drawer is 90% stripe and stare.

I had a monthly subscription which was a dream- new knickers every month!

Anyway, they got perfectly, feel like silk(they are super soft tencel).

Really worth having a look at the bright, gorgeous patterns.

Agree with you on handbags, I finally bought myself an APC demi lune bag online after years of using some crappy eBay buy, and I can barely get my hands into it as the zip is so small and the leather so rigid. I haven't sent it back as I can't be bothered and it does look nice, but how did it get past so many designers etc when it's more or less impossible to use without jamming your hand? Although it is pickpocket proof, I'll give it that.

I actually love you. Each article you seem to dip into my soul/ state of mind, and I find myself saying YES YES YES! I suspect however, I love clothes , but due to budget constraints and too many carbs/alcohol I shun the desire to spend. But there’s no denying when I splurge it feels rather lovely. Naughty, totally, who could deny, but oh so nice…xxx

This is timely, as I’m being tempted by a pair of white cowboy boots on Vinted. Now I think of it, I can’t imagine a single occasion in the next month when I’d wear these…

I don't give a shit about clothes honestly. It creeps up on you with age. I just wear black leggings, a band t shirt and a long open checked/denim/khaki shirt day to day. If I'm out to meet someone for lunch or have to dress up somehow I'll chuck on a printed dress with Docs and a leather jacket. I wear a uniform for work. That's it. That's all I wear. I'm done with deluding myself otherwise.

Loved this – fascinating. Also, I actually threw away a white tank top, which I LOVED and had only had for a few months, because sunscreen/sweat had ruined it and I couldn't get it white again. So thank you very much, I will now confidently buy another one because I know what to do when it happens again.

I am anything and everything Tibi, which I get on resale platforms. Amy Smilovic and her Instagram changed my life, kid you not.

I have gazillions of great black tees - long, short & three quarter length, round, vee & scoop & only one white. I look absolutely rubbish in white tees unless v tanned & on holidays. Ditto the bloody holy grail ‘great white shirt’ - look terrible. Either like a waitress or secretary. The other classic that I look vile in is camel anything. Pick what suits you best colour wise other than that top list. Sports bras great if have big tits but hate bras. Wear sleeveless & racer backs while you can. My arms gone to dogs now.

Fabulous column, Esther. I KNOW I should be capsuling in black/navy, white grey cream but when something bright catches my eye I buy it even though it goes with absolutely nothing. Ooh! I’ve answered my own complaint - if I have black navy grey basics the reds pinks and blues will work! Thanks Ros, you’re a genius!

Love your reply. I saw a friend in London a couple of weeks ago and she was wearing wide but mid-calf length trousers from Cos with trainers. Looked fab. She's in her sixties. As for jeans, on the same trip I put myself in the hands of a sweet girl at the Levis store in Covent Garden, and she chose poor old confused me, some extremely flattering dark denim boot-cut jeans which go with absolutely everything except dog-walking. Which is fine, because I have two cats...
