I had a conversation with two friends about this whilst out walking a couple of weeks ago. They were horrified that I don't wear SPF on my face every day, whatever the weather. I am getting quite paranoid about wrinkles now I am 52, so I rushed home and ordered a tube of Simple Triple Protect Moisturiser SPF 30 (Protect 'N' Glow!!). It cost under a fiver and I am really pleased with it. I wear it over my daily moisturiser and under primer. You don't need much and it isn't greasy. No idea if it's actually protecting my skin but I feel so much better now I've got that sorted! Thank you for another great post.

I also invested in a nice straw hat last year and the difference in my face after a day in the sun is noticeable - it doesn’t have that creased, dusty, dehydrated look that you get after a day at the beach.

Freckles and dark hair. I have worn SPF religiously for 3 years since I was 44. I 100% notice the difference in my face even in winter as it seems to protect from weather full stop. I can see when I haven’t applied it after a winter’s walk in the rain and after a day sat near a window or a car journey. Overcast days are evil as they can make you screw up your face cos of the white cloud / glare so I like the extra protection. I do feel that it has undone some of the crow’s feet damage. Or perhaps just paused it.

I don’t understand why people wear a separate SPF when you can use moisturisers to do the job.

Tried loads but hands down La Roche Posay Aquagel is excellent and I love the glow it leaves on my skin - totally easy and my moisturiser of choice.

Terrible terrible at wearing sunscreen in anything other than proper sun, even though I know I should. A deeply unhelpful recommendation I just bought is Trader Joe’s Daily Sunscreen which is $8 and has a dreamy texture. Just bought when in NYC and now feeling pre-emptively bereft for when it runs out.

Have a look at Altruist on Amazon. Recommended by a dermatologist. Not expensive, not greasy, doesn’t smell of anything. Nevertheless, I still don’t like putting it on. If I put it on my forearms to stop more dark spots, for some reason it makes a black mark under my watch.

The Murad SPF 50 one is quite nice - £60 a pop though if I remember

But yeah I put a lot of faith in my make up having SPF 15, which is probably laughably low. Sure, worst that can happen is you end up looking stern and awesome like Dame Maggie Smith or Harriet Walter.

I hate getting burnt, my face getting burnt or even “catching the sun” makes me irrationally angry, but I am more relaxed in winter though I wear moisturiser with it in sometimes if I’m going to be out in the middle of the day. From this time on I use Amber Solaire 50 for face, as it’s the only one I’ve found (and my search has not been exhaustive; in fact may have previously been confined to whatever I’m putting on my kids) that seems to work well with contacts and doesn’t give me sore eyes when the hayfever plays up or I see an emotional advert.

I refuse to wear sunscreen in an overcast English winter, that's ridiculous imho -though I do wear Nars Tinted Moisturiser (spf 30 alledgedly) all year round. But in the summer I wear anything that's taken my fancy. Have screenshotted a few of these suggestions and put them in my 'Shopping' album on my phone for when I'm next in the dreaded Brent Cross. What I do like is Isle of Paradise tanning drops, face tan you mix in with Moisturiser (or sunscreen) to give the 'healthy glow' so beloved of beauty editors. Not every day though or one can look like one has 'been Tango-ed' (how to tell everyone you're 67 without telling everyone you're 67).

My 26 swears by sunscreen every day whatever the weather but then seldom wears a bra (34DD) so though I don't worry about her skin I do worry about her posture and possible premature razor-strop bosoms.

I work outside in a plant nursery all year, and got into the habit of spf every day all year round when I mistook several of my older colleagues for being about a decade older than they actually were. Sun really does destroy your skin. Was loyal to Laroche Posay for many years then they changed the formula and it stained all my tops bright yellow around the neck. So now I use garnier Antidryness SPF 50, reapply twice a day, wear a massive sun hat as soon as the sun comes out and don’t forget the sunglasses ( older colleagues all now have cataracts forming from too much sun exposure, terrifying)

Ooh, I am so bad at sunscreen. Don’t like the stickiness, does give me spots, hate the yellowing on every shirt collar. I do have La Roche Posay Anthelios which I apply religiously to my ears when the sun is out, otherwise they come up in itchy lumps, but I wear sunglasses and a baseball cap almost all the time, year round (sunglasses to keep grit out of gas permeable contacts, hat bc I hate the feel of stray hairs on my face). I do wear it on holiday and am just about to buy a huge bottle of F50 otherwise my pallid flab will cook in the Greek sun. I do hate the sundamaged v on my collarbones but I equally hate having to chuck out a nice top because it’s been stained irreversibly. Anybody found one which doesn’t wreck your clothes?

I always hated the feel of greasy sunscreen layered with loads of other skincare products. Now I have a small child, spend quite a lot of time outdoors when I'm not working and have ditched most of the skincare. Skin&me cream does the heavy lifting overnight. In the morning the Garnier anti-age SPF50 straight after cleansing is just hydrating enough. If I'm working (indoors most of the day) I just use makeup with some SPF.

La Roche Posay 50 nearly every day. Don’t forget the décolletage otherwise it will give away any years you might have been able to hide on your face!

I find the whole skincare routine and SPF a huge palaver, but I’m of the generation where we sunbathed with baby oil and wish I knew then what I know now. I do apply SPF 50 on my face (La Roche Posay Anthelios) and neck every day (not on a winter’s day when I’m indoors, ‘tho some say I should) and use retinal/retinol at night. I believe my skin does look better for it.

I’ve heard good things about the new No7 serum…

I always feel like wearing sunscreen ALL the time would be a bit extra, suggesting I'm either an international supermodel or just terribly vain (I am terribly vain, but also slovenly).

I wear it every day, SPF50, and have done for years. I have rosacea and UV light is a trigger for that, plus I use retinol which makes it even more important and I just don't want the wrinkles or the sunspots thanks! My favourite at the mo is tinted, ColourScience SunForgettable Flex, which adapts to your skin colour - I mix light with a little bit of medium, works really well. You need 1/4 tsp on your face to get the factor protection on the bottle which is LOADS to put on so always go as high as you can as chances are you aren't putting enough. I also like Heliocare gel 50 for under makeup and Ultra Violette Dreamscreen which is tinted and comes in loads of shades. Drs Wedgeworth and Bunting are great for sunscreen recs, in the summer I also like Jan Marini SPF 50 tinted physical protectant.
