It’s like when you have a child “baking” just crystallises out of thin air around you. YOU MUST BAKE. Cupcakes, cookies, scones, bread, flapjacks - whatever. I found that not only was there was a compelling personal urge to do this, I was also constantly being asked to by nursery and then school. It’s not even like my children enjoyed, wanted to help or could be helpful even if they wanted to join in.
It took me three tries to connect the first and second sentences of this piece the way you intended. I don't bake; I've never wanted to. When my kid turned fourteen or so, baking did magically appear out of thin air. Cakes, shortbread, all sorts of things, crowded counters in the kitchen when I make coffee.
Now they're moved out, and I occasionally think cake would be nice. But I still don't bake.
Oh the baking!! I got home from work yesterday, frazzled and tired and was somewhat yelled at by my 9 year old that she had volunteered me to make 50 biscuits for her Xmas fair tomorrow, what the actual fuck Beatrice ?! She then slunk off somewhere to NOT HELP and then asked me why I was being shouty. Jeez.
Thanks for the book tip, any others? I’m in need of reading inspo having just finished Miss Austen which was much better than the insipid cover would have you believe x x
This is my go to gingerbread recipe 😊 I used to read recipe rifle when my daughter was little and I must have got it from you but had totally forgotten the origin. Making it next week for some Christmas cookie making at home. We might even attempt a house. Maybe….
Your gingerbread sounds delicious; I wish I could eat it...maybe I can modify it to be gluten and dairy free...coconut oil instead of butter?! Almond flour? I made a banana bread and grated fresh ginger into the mix, it gave it a nice little kick!
Oh, and the baking pressure from schools? I remember being roped into making cakes for bake sales, and I totally sucked and never had the right-sized molds, and all the other mothers brought in these perfect cakes with smooth icing and no bits dripping off the edges like those candles we used to see on bottles of Chianti in Italian restaurants. And mine looked so derelict and mucky and bleh. Not my proudest moments!
However, I regularly make banana bread - a pretty fail safe recipe I know by heart.
Sounds wonderful! And Thanks! 🥣Now, please, has any translated measurements into US measures?🙏🏻

Yes!!
I once made gingerbread with my little boy and misread the ginger. Three tablespoons of ginger rather than teaspoons.
My then four year old said “ooh mummy it tastes of fire”.
Never tried since. I do like the sound of this recipe though.
I invited my niece to join us for a Christmas baking day on Sunday and now I’m thinking eek, what shall we actually bake?!
“Tastes of fire”’🤣
gingerbread!!
Oh I SO miss Recipe Rifle! 💔💔💔💔
Oh I miss RR too. Was some great stuff on there. Could you reincarnate
it for subscribers - you’d have bonus content already available then!

Well that’s an activity for the weekend sorted, thanks!
Is there anyway to access Recipe Rifle or is it gone from the Interwebs forever (please say not)?!
I miss Recipe Rifle! x
I know! I'm sorry. It died.

Have fun baking with your daughter 🎄💕
Perfect timing - as I was desperately searching for this recipe and Recipe Riffle last night.
