Lovely Esther, we have just finished Two Weeks in August and loved it. Kind of silly but well acted and beautiful and a bit of summer fluff. Have you dared watch Tie Toe on Channel 4 yet? IT IS SO GOOD. But also traumatising. We have watched it on the edge of our seats feeling both compelled and repulsed. Brilliant TV from Russell T Davies as usual. Oh also, have just finished Ben Elton's autobiography which should be required reading for all freelance creatives as is essentially a warts and all account of every career near miss he's ever had.

As for jeans; fuck them.

I am still wearing a pair of Boden girlfriend jeans from about 2017. Nothing else I have ever tried comes close to working for me so I have given up being on trend.

I never thought that I was a Levi's woman (not sure where I got that from), but when I tried on a pair of the high rise straight (724), I felt that God had answered my jean prayers. They work with boots, trainers and sandals.

Same! I have them in 4 colours.

Another vote for Agolde jeans here. And Rag & Bone. Both investment brands but my two pairs still going strong 5yrs on and I've only felt need to buy a new pair (ASOS) in that time as a new, fun pair (may regret this, barrel+..so much denim!)

Levi's 501 90's mid rise straight jeans. Nothing further.

Esther, if you can find Cambio jeans (I live in Switzerland, but I think Cambio is German...trying to sound Italian!!) they are my favourite. They fit, they are comfortable and they last forever. They are not cheap, but they are not Mother expensive either. I have rarely buy any other brand for over 20 years! Although I did cave for a fabulous pair of Bash flared jeans with embroidery on the wide V of the flare, because I've been wanting jeans with embroidery on the flare ever since 8th grade when a girl called Charlotte at school swanned around in hers being oh-so-popular. I'm now 64...so her jeans made a lasting impression! I did a photoshoot wearing them a few weeks ago and they are fabulous!!! They are the ones Bash used in their adverts in magazines this spring! I'll show you a photo if you're interested. They are mega cool, just like you!

Another vote for Levi’s (but not the modern fabric, it has too much stretch). I love the different leg length options and they tend to be true to size.

The wedgie bootcut are fab - although bootcut are not today’s trend they’re so flattering.

I have just bought a pair of the “superlow loose” too - don’t be put off by the name! They are not super low at all but sit perfectly at the waist. Wide leg with a tiny touch of barrel shape.

I also love the selvedge 501s.

I am at an unspeakably dull work event all day today, am SO BORED that I've gone through all 57 comments and tallied up every positive recommendation. The results are as follows:

14 Levis

12 M&S

3 Uniqlo

2 Agolde

2 Topshop Jamie (may they rest in peace)

2 Sainsbury's/TU

and 1 vote each for: Good American/Mango/Arket/Palome/Zara/Paige/Sezane/Me+Em/Biba/Madewell/Whistles/Abercrombie/Reiss/Mint Velvet/Weekday/Nudie/Free People/Frame/Motel/H&M/WBHM

Hope this helps. Kill me now.

I have always loved Paige jeans and their straight leg version is v on trend right now. Available at John Lewis so easy to try on.

Are expensive but cost-per-wear ratio works out well.

Jeans shopping. I took no notice of M&S until friends kept admitting their jeans were M&S. Bought a white pair, wide, but not ludicrous palazzo, high waisted, in the winter and they are good and admired and wash well. I was scared I would blob on them by 0830 am, but was being neurotic. Two Weeks in August: sort of enjoyed. But ruined house was derelict one day and mysteriously habitable, with bedding and Toast type kitchen stuff the next. Last episode to go. Reminds me why my husband won't go on holiday with anyone.

I don't wear jeans in the summer - too thick and hot, even lightweight ones - but will have to revisit this post round about October as my last pair is too holey.

I bought a pair of jeans from Sezane and one from Me+Em in my charity shop in Blackheath last month and they're pretty glorious (partic the Sezane, which were a TENNER).

Frances's avatar

Your charity shop sounds incredible! My local ones just filled with Primark…

Oh god, jeans. I live in the fuckers but I *still* don’t own a perfect pair. I took a punt on a Biba straight leg pair in a charity shop earlier - confidently labelled 12 (which I am - the size, not the age, I’m 51) then met my husband for lunch and before they were even fully out of the bag he remarked ‘Ooh they look awfully small’, all casual, while whamming back fish and chips.

If I try those buggers on in the morning (skinniest part of the day, obv) and they fit, I will dance a jig. And if they don’t I will pop them in the bin like it never even happened

I feel seen. Ugh. Jeans shopping. On a par with bra shopping and foundation shopping. I have never ever ever found the perfect one of any of these and it’s a lifelong quest.

I bought a Madewell pair from John lewis years ago but they stopped stocking the brand. Sorted myself 4 years ago on a trip to the States with a couple of their 'curve' range (specifically for people with big waist:hip differentials) and since then, nothing.

Emily Rose's avatar

Ugh! The curse of the curvy!! I hear you 💯

Esther! Thank you SO much for mentioning my book here - I'm honoured, while wearing the Levi's 501 90's mid rise straight jeans from that annoying click-baity article (I didn't buy them until India Knight confirmed they were great - they are). Kx
