My god I was excited for the Barbie movie. I have very few problems with Barbie. I don’t blame the impossibly-proportioned doll for women hating their bodies. And capitalism is shady, but as some guy once said: have you got any better ideas?
I love Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, I love that Kate McKinnon and Will Ferrell and Connor Swindell and Simu Liu. I admired enormously the Greta Gerwig adaptation of Little Women. Thus I greedily sucked in the massive hype of the Barbie movie, fed to me from the very first glimpse of the trailer, (I gasped in my reclining Odeon chair when I saw Robbie’s foot emerge from that high heel), through to the great slop of content on Instagram. I thought it looked brilliant.
And it was! Until it wasn’t.
