Gladiator sandals. Big, chunky, hideous, black gladiator sandals.
They have been creeping, (clomping?), up on us for about two years now and this year is the time to decide: are you going to commit to this? Or watch it pass by, like I watched puff sleeves, prairie dresses and very dark coloured-in eyebrows pass by?
I have, in fact, bought a pair. They were the best I could find that were still in stock. I tried on many pairs that were very heavy or uncomfortable but now that I have these sandals (from Hush, this is how mainstream these sandals are now) I have lost my nerve in terms of actually wearing the suckers and I wonder if they will have to be sent back.
I know my husband will hate them, because they are so very fugly. But, oh! they make my heart skip a beat for how very, extremely modern they make every item of clothing look. And I buy so few new clothes these days that the ones that I have need all the help I can get.
How about you? Do you have a pair of clumpy clompy gladiator sandals? How ugly is too ugly? And should we ever care what husbands think? Please leave a comment in the handy box below.
My answer to how fugly is too fugly is these... https://www.marksandspencer.com/leather-tassel-block-heel-loafers/p/clp60548941?color=BLACK#intid=pid_pg1pip29g4r4c2
I bought them for work as they ticked all my boxes - comfortable (number one on the list now I'm 'old'), go with all my work outfits, stylish (?). I really, really wanted to like them, and in fact I did, but in the end they reminded me too much of my school shoes from 1995 when I was 15 so they were eventually returned.
This post has prompted me to drag out my fugly chunky black sandals I bought for lockdown walks round the fields in the summer 2020. I hadn't thought about them since but you're right they really update an outfit. Maybe I was a couple of years ahead of my time?
They are super cool and you’re right, they update every outfit. I’ve just spent the weekend in Brighton and the best dressed are all wearing black clompy sandals. A friend I was with bought the Russell and Bromley equivalent to the Hush ones and though expensive says they are VERY comfy. I have the same Hush ones and get compliments each time I wear them. Prob got another year or two of them being relevant but for £60 in the sale, not too bad!
